Responsible decision-making model: A series of steps to follow to ensure that people make good decisions.
How to Use the Responsible Decision-Making Model
- Describe the situation. If you have time, write it down. If not, describe it out loud.
- List possible decisions. If you have time, write them down. If not, list them out loud.
- Share the list with a responsible adult. If possible, delay the decision until you have done so.
- Use six questions to evaluate the possible consequences of each decision. The questions are: Will this decision promote health? Will this decision protect safety? Will this decision follow laws? Will this decision show respect? Will this decision follow guidlines? Will this decision demonstrate good character?
- Decide which decision is most responsible and appropriate.
- Act on your decision and then evaluate the results.
